Best Bachelor Thesis 2026 Award Handed Over to Martin Komarnicki

At this year's graduation ceremony on September 18th, 2026, Martin Komarnicki was honored with the Friedrich-Dessauer-Preis (donated by the VDE Rhein-Main e.V.), which recognizes the year's outstanding Bachelor thesis.
The thesis I had the pleasure of supervising, titled "Intelligent Motion Analysis for Oral Hygiene Optimization: An AI-Based Application for Detecting Hand and Facial Keypoints", presents an AI-driven application that tracks hand and facial motions during tooth brushing in order to help users improve their daily dental care. The project combines state-of-the-art machine learning with advanced computer vision methods. Further information on the thesis is available here.
Friedrich Dessauer (1881-1963) was a Frankfurt-based physicist and X-ray pioneer who, after building X-ray equipment as a young entrepreneur, became a professor at the University of Frankfurt and a founder of modern radiology and biophysics research there. In addition to his scientific work, he was a member of the Reichstag for the Centre Party and a committed social reformer, convictions that led to his persecution by the National Socialists and eventual exile in Istanbul. The Friedrich-Dessauer-Preis, awarded by the VDE, honors the best Bachelor thesis with 500€.
